About Michael

Michael Dunlea became a teacher to make students feel valued, become empowered and live extraordinary lives. An alternate route teacher, he began his career at 37. Michael is a 2012 New Jersey State Teacher of the Year finalist, and a 16 year veteran classroom teacher. He currently teaches 3rd grade in Tabernacle, NJ.

Michael received the Presidential Award of Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and is National Board Certified in Early Childhood. He is a 2020 NEA Global Learning Fellow and an Innovation Lab Schools American Ambassador.

Michael has served as an advisor to the NJ Department of Education on several councils and committees and is an active member of his union. He is on the New Jersey Education Association’s state Elections Committee and serves as an NJEA state delegate to the NEA Representative Assembly.

Michael founded a non-profit called Stafford Teachers And Residents Together (START), when Hurricane Sandy hit the Southern Jersey Coast, where he lives with his wife of 27 years and his 3 amazing children and was President of Alliance for a LIving Ocean, ALO from 2012-2019.

He has a Bachelor's Degree in History from Thomas Edison State College, a Masters Degree in Educational Technology from New Jersey City University and is pursuing a second Masters Degree in Teacher Leadership at Mount Holyoke College.
